It's 14th century Barcelona at the height of the city's trade and military power in the Mediterranean. Arnau Estanyol arrives to find a city dominated by the construction of the city's great pride - the cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar -and by its shame, the deadly Inquisition. Arnau joins the guild of stoneworkers and helps to build the church, while his best friend and adopted brother Joanet studies to become a priest. Arnau prospers and falls secretly in love. He is betrayed and brought before the Inquisitor, and finds himself face-to-face with Joanet.
